CELEBRATING 250 YEARS
OF AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE

Native Americans and Forts in Plains District during the years prior to the War of Independence

The current exhibit on display at Plains District Museum presents an overview of Plains
District during the years preceding the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

The few hundred settlers in the area were politically divided—loyalists, patriots,
neutralists. The number of Native Americans had steadily declined. The exhibit focuses
on the life of those Native Americans and the Forts that were built by the few settlers as
protection against them.

The exhibit includes a model of a wigwam made by Museum
volunteer Joe Adolph and extensive artifacts from the collections of Charles Rife,
Michael Driver, Joe May, and Mike Wean. It also includes a hands -on opportunity to
make your own wigwam.

The free exhibit will be on display through July 2026.
