The First Exhibit in 2025 Emphasizes The Value of “Service” In Our Community

The exhibit currently on display at Plains District Museum is a tribute to the nine service clubs who support our community. These clubs include four Ruritan Clubs: Broadway/Timberville, Tenth Legion/Mountain Valley, Fulks Run, and Bergton. Also included are the Broadway/Timberville Lions, Broadway-Timberville Rotary, Plains District Women’s Club, Loyal Order of Moose Club, and the historic Odd Fellows Organization in Timberville and possibly in Broadway.

The mission of all these organizations is to make our communities a better place to live. Through photographs, history and artifacts, the exhibit documents the work that they do in support of our schools, non-profit organizations, Fire and Rescue Services, library, beautification programs, health services, and more. Plains District is fortunate to have so many active service clubs. The mission of all of these organizations is to improve the quality of life in our communities.

Social and service clubs first started in America in the 18th through early 19th centuries and became widespread after WWI. Formed by groups of men who shared the same patriotism, interests in business, and economic status, the clubs began primarily as social clubs. With the changes in the economy created by WWI, the organizations saw the need to help improve the lives of average citizens in their communities and became more service oriented.

Through photographs, history and artifacts, the exhibit documents the work that they do in support of our schools, non-profit organizations, Fire and Rescue Services, library, beautification programs, health services, and more. Plains District is fortunate to have so many active service clubs.

The current exhibit will be featured until June 2025.
